Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

 A simple appetizer is what everyone seems to need in a pinch. With just 3 ingredients, these bacon wrapped asparagus are the perfect appetizer, side dish or snack for any celebration. Simply wrap thinly sliced bacon around a bundle of asparagus, sprinkle with brown sugar and roast until crispy. They’re sweet and salty…these are delicious!

This idea for Bacon Wrapped Asparagus popped into my head right before Easter. My family and I were trying to keep things super simple for a brunch menu – we decided on egg casserole, fruit and vanilla scones. It just didn’t seem like enough so I threw together this idea to wrap bacon around asparagus, sprinkle with some brown sugar and roast. These ended up being a huge hit and incredibly easy to make.

  • The flavor is amazing with just 3 ingredients! The salt in the bacon is enough to flavor the asparagus and the brown sugar offers the perfect amount of sweetness. Not to mention, the caramelization that happens with the brown sugar and bacon is so unreal! 
  • They can be enjoyed as an appetizer, side dish or even as a snack. 
  • They’re crispy, juicy and satisfying – they have a wonderful contrast in textures. The bacon crisps up perfectly while the asparagus remains tender and slightly charred. 
  • They can be made ahead of time, refrigerated then roasted later or even the next day.

  • Asparagus: I love asparagus. It’s a wonderful vegetable that is pretty versatile when it comes to flavoring. Thick or thin asparagus can be used. Just make sure to cut the fibrous ends off as they are difficult to chew. 
  • Bacon: Any type of bacon will work. However, do not purchases thick cut bacon as it doesn’t crisp up as well. Make sure the bacon is thinly sliced
  • Brown sugar: Light or dark brown sugar will work in this recipe!

How to make Bacon Wrapped Asparagus:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. 
  2. Prepare the asparagus – wash and cut the fibrous ends off. 
  3. Bundle a few asparagus and wrap then in a thin slice of bacon. Sprinkle with brown sugar then place them seem side down on the prepared baking sheet. 
  4. Roast for about 20 minutes. Remove and enjoy! 

Substitutions and variations: 

  • You can use honey or maple syrup instead of brown sugar. Just give each bundle a little drizzle before roasting. 
  • You can use turkey bacon, pancetta or even prosciutto. 
  • You can use any type of flavored bacon, just make sure it’s thinly sliced. Some examples would be maple bacon, pepper bacon, honey bacon, garlic bacon, herb bacon, etc. If you use a bacon that already has sugar in it, you won’t need to add additional sugar. 
  • Want a little heat? Add some crushed red pepper flakes for a little spice.

Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Asparagus is bundled together then wrapped in salty bacon and sprinkled with brown sugar and roasted until crispy and caramelized. These are delicious!

Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of asparagus
  • 1 package thin bacon (don't get the thick cut)
  • brown sugar

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a rimmed cookie sheet with parchment paper if you have it (this will help with clean up but you don't need it).

Next, cut the aparaugs in half then take 3 of them and wrap a thin slice of bacon around it. Place on your prepared cookie sheet. Do this until you've used all the asparagus. You will probably have left over bacon. Finally, sprinkle each with a little brown sugar then bake for 25-30 minutes until bacon is crispy. Enjoy!

Notes

These can be prepared ahead of time then baked later.
