What makes rice fluffy?

The key to achieving that ideal texture lies in the correct liquid-to-rice ratio, gentle simmering and proper steaming. Each grain should be separate, soft and never mushy. With a few simple techniques, you will be on your way to making flavorful fluffy white rice! I like to use long grain white rice!

What is long grain white rice?

Long grain white rice is always in my pantry. It’s know for it’s light, fluffy texture and slightly firm bite when cooked. It’s less starchy resulting in a fluffier rice that does not become sticky or mushy. It’s ideal for a variety of dishes from stir-fries, burritos bowls, and curries.

What you need to make fluffy white rice:

Sweetened condensed milk, butter, rice, and vanilla extract for homemade rice pudding recipe.
  • Medium sauce pan with a lid. A medium pan is the perfect size for 1 or 2 cups of white rice.
  • 1 cup of long grain white rice – I prefer long grain white rice. It’s very versatile.
  • 2 cups of chicken or vegetable stock – Using stock helps flavor the rice. Water can also be used, though.
  • 1-2 tablespoons butter – A little butter adds flavor and also helps the rice from not sticking together.

How to make fluffy white rice:

  1. First, rinse rice using a fine mesh strainer. This helps remove excess starch and dirt.
  2. Add rice, chicken/vegetable stock and butter to a medium sauce pan.
  3. Place over high heat with lid on. Bring to a boil (watch and listen carefully for it to boil). Once boiling, reduce to gentle simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. After 15 minutes, remove from heat and gently tilt the lid to let the steam out. Do not take the lid off, though. Serve promptly.
  5. If you are not serving the rice right away, let cool completely with lid slightly tilted. Once cooled, place lid back on and keep cold in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, place the sauce pan over low heat. Add 1/8-1/4 cup chicken/vegetable stock and stir until warmed through.

Tips for success:

  • Buy a quality white rice, organic preferred.
  • Use a medium sauce pan. A small one won’t give the rice enough room to cook evenly.
  • You don’t have to use the butter, but I find that it helps add flavor and helps separate the rice. A neutral mild flavored oil can replace the butter if needed.
  • It’s essential to let the rice vent after cooking. If the lid is kept on, the rice will continue to steam and become overcooked.
  • Make sure to store the rice in an airtight container if using it for meal prepping. This will help it from drying out.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes! You can double, or triple the recipe. You will need a larger pot if you triple the recipe. Rice is wonderful for meal prepping. Make a large batch and serve with your favorite roasted vegetable and protein.

Notes

Rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I have found that cooking the rice over a medium sized burner perfects the rice every time. If you only have a larger burner, just watch carefully - the rice may be done before 15 minutes as it will provide more heat.
