Whose grandma makes or made homemade applesauce? Mine sure did. Let’s be honest…she made everything homemade. That’s just how they do it up in Sibley Iowa. My grandma grew up on a farm and raised her family on a farm so she KNOWS how to cook. Like really knows. I mean just check out this recipe for my Grandma’s Brownies. It’s one of the most popular recipes on my blog..for good reason! Her recipes are SO nostalgic to me, like they’re engrained in my soul. This homemade applesauce recipe is right up there with the brownie recipe. I’m very excited to share it with you.

What you need to make homemade applesauce

Ingredients:

  • Apples – Granny Smith are wonderful for this recipe. I like the sweet and sour combo.
  • Brown sugar and granulated sugar – they sweeten the applesauce. If you want an unsweetened applesauce, simple don’t add sugar.
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg – make sure to include both. The nutmeg is needed for spice.
  • Vanilla extract – makes such a difference. Adds warmth and sweetness.
  • Water – the water is needed so the apples have a liquid to cook down in.

Instructions

Simply add all the ingredients to a pot and simmer over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes or until the apples have softened. It’s really that simple. Now, how you serve the applesauce is up to you! I prefer a chunkier applesauce so I mash them with a fork. For a smooth applesauce, simply blend it in a blender. Or you can do nothing to the apples and have a really chunky applesauce. Sometimes my grandma would just quarter the apples and we’d eat these big soft sweet apples right out of the jar. Delicious!

What to serve with homemade applesauce

I can tell you how we enjoyed it growing up and to this day, I wouldn’t change a thing.

  • As a side dish for holiday dinners. It goes really well with ham, turkey and prime rib. We also enjoyed it as a side with sloppy joe’s. Another one of my grandma’s recipes.
  • Over ice cream. YES! This was my very favorite. Spoon it over vanilla ice cream. You’ll thank me later. It would also be delicious over a high fat Greek yogurt.
  • On a dinner roll with butter. Basically treat it like a jam or jelly.
  • Enjoy as is!
