Grandma recipes are the best.

If you’ve been reading the blog for some time now, you know that my Grandma Den Beste lived on a farm in Iowa and was 100 percent Dutch. Which means a few things. One, she’s a dang good cook and baker; two, she loves almond; and the most important? She is an amazing person. She’s 96 and still kickin’ it.

She’s pretty much amazing.

And so were her recipes. We have a few of them but Grandma Den Beste often just whipped up recipes by look, feel and smell versus measuring. I think that’s incredible. It is incredible. My Grandma is incredible.

Well the good news is we have her Poppy Seed Bread Recipe!

First of all, I never knew you could just make poppy seed bread. I always thought it had to be lemon poppy seed bread.

Who knew?

The secret ingredient to this poppy seed bread recipe is the almond and butter extracts.

Yes, almond my friends! And yes, butter extract! I don’t often use butter extract in my recipes, but I think I’m going to start because it adds.so.much.butta.flavaaaaa.

What I love most about this bread is that it tastes just like something my Grandma would make.

It’s not super sweet, it’s not overly moist, it’s simple to make – you literally put everything in a bowl and mix it, and it goes will with a cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk.

Very Iowa. (Insert yellow heart emoji here)

Fluffy homemade vanilla bean pound cake slices on wooden cutting board, perfect for dessert or teatime.

It lasts for days too. I had it for like a week and it was still good. I’m not sure that I should have eaten it after a week, but I did.

I’m still here.

Golden vanilla pound cake fresh out of the pan, with a cracked top revealing moist, tender crumb. Perfect for dessert or tea time, this homemade bakery-style cake is a sweet treat.

Thanks Grandma!
