Why this is the best guacamole recipe
- Simple Ingredients – Just a few staple ingredients make this amazing guacamole recipe. All the ingredients have a space to shine.
- Compliments all Mexican recipes – I serve this alongside all the Mexican meals I make. Because it’s simple, it goes with everything!
- Kid friendly – this recipe is super kid friendly. It’s mild enough for their simple palettes but doesn’t lack in freshness and flavor.
- Adaptable – This recipe can be easily customized to your liking. I give a few options below on how to adapt it!

Guacamole Ingredients
- Ripe avocados – Ripe avocados are the key to making a good guacamole. They offer the freshest flavor and the best buttery texture.
- Lime juice & Lemon juice – Both lime and lemon offer a citrusy punch that balances the creamy avocado. They also prevent the avocados from browning. This juicer is helpful!
- Cilantro – This fresh, peppery herb balances out the buttery avocado as well.
- Red onion – A little red onion offers a mild onion flavor, color and a slight crunch.
- Jalapeño – A little jalapeño for spice! For a more mild spice, remove the veins and seeds. For a spicier version, dice with a few seeds.
- Salt & pepper – A good pinch of salt and a little pepper bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients.
How to make Guacamole

Tips for success
- Prepare all of the ingredients ahead of time. Measure, chop, dice, etc. This helps prevent mistakes and makes clean up easier.
- Purchase ripe avocados.
- Finely dice red onion and jalapeño to ensure they’re evenly distributed throughout the guacamole. I love using this knife for all my chopping!
How to tell if an avocado is ripe
- The squeeze test – Squeeze the avocado gently. It should be firm, but give slightly.
- Color – Ripe avocados are typically very dark green or almost black. However, some versions have a light green color when ripe.
- Stem test – If the avocado still has a stem attached, remove it. If the area underneath the stem is green, it’s ripe. If it’s brown/tan, it’s not ready yet.
Substitutions and Additions
- Don’t like cilantro? Try flat leaf parsley, Thai basil or even mint.
- Chives, white onion or green onions would be a good substitute for red onion.
- You can sub more lime juice instead of lemon juice. I would not use all lemon juice, though.
- To spice it up, add red pepper flakes or keep some of the seeds from the jalapeño when dicing.
- Fruit additions – diced pineapple and mango would be delicious. Pomegranate seeds would also be very good and beautiful.
- Diced fresh tomato would also work well in this guacamole.

Fresh & Easy Guacamole (My Go-To Recipe)

A simpe, fresh recipe for authentic guacamole. Avocoads are mashed then mixed with jalapeno, cilantro, red onion, lemon & lime juice and seasoned with salt and pepper.
Ingredients
- 4 large ripe avocados
- ⅓ cup finely chopped red onion
- 3 tablespoons freshly chopped cilantro
- ½ lemon juiced, plus more as needed
- ½ lime juiced, plus more as needed
- 2 teaspoons finely chopped jalapeño, seeds and veins removed (purchase a small one)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Add avocoads to a large bowl and mash with a fork.
- Add the rest of the ingredients: red onion, cilantro, jalapeno, lemon juice and lime juice. Stir well. Taste for salt and pepper, add to your liking!
Note: If you don't mind spice, you can leave the seeds and veins in the jalapenos. However, it could make the guacamole very spicy. To remove the seeds and veins, slice the top of the jalapeño off and then slice the jalapeno in half lengthwise. Use a spoon to scoop out the veins and seeds then chop. Make sure to wash your hands well after!
Notes
Guacamole will last 2-3 days in the refrigerator if stored properly. To store, place it in an airtight container then press a piece of plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole before placing the lid on.
